About HerStory Initiative Society:

HerStory Initiative Society is a vibrant, youth-led, Afghan women-centred startup based in Vancouver, Canada. We’re on a mission to amplify the voices and stories of Afghan girls and women who’ve faced the challenges of conflict and displacement. Through heartfelt digital storytelling, mentorship, and advocacy, we create a safe space for Afghan women to share their unique experiences and reclaim their narratives. Our initiatives, like InTheirWords and NexusTalk, weave connections, spark understanding, and celebrate the resilience of Afghan women.


Position Overview:

We’re seeking a passionate and creative Manager, Editorial and Content, Afghan Women’s Narratives, to lead our storytelling efforts, bringing to life the powerful stories of Afghan women. In this role, you’ll dive into research, build meaningful connections with Afghan women to share their stories, conduct interviews, craft compelling narratives, and guide a team of volunteer writers and editors. As part of our startup, you’ll bring fresh, creative ideas to shape HerStory’s storytelling initiatives, helping us share authentic, impactful stories with the world. Key Responsibilities

  • Research: Explore the diverse life stories of Afghan women, both in Afghanistan and across the diaspora, to uncover meaningful narratives with care and cultural sensitivity.

  • Outreach: Build trusting relationships with Afghan women, inviting them to share their stories with warmth and respect.

  • Story Development: Conduct heartfelt interviews, write and edit authentic life stories, and ensure each narrative resonates with truth and impact.

  • Team Supervision: Inspire and support a team of volunteer writers and editors, offering guidance and feedback to create high-quality, meaningful content.

  • Content Strategy: Work closely with the HerStory team to shape our storytelling vision, sharing stories across platforms like our website, social media, and publications.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Uphold ethical storytelling practices, ensuring all content honors the cultural, social, and personal experiences of Afghan women.


Qualifications

Required:

  • A knack for writing, editing, and storytelling, with experience in narrative development, journalism, or creative writing.

  • Leadership or team management experience, ideally in a volunteer or nonprofit setting.

  • A deep understanding of the challenges faced by Afghan women and displaced communities, with a commitment to cultural sensitivity.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to connect with storytellers and team members.

  • Ability to work independently, juggle priorities, and thrive in a remote, startup environment.

  • A creative mindset to bring fresh ideas and contribute to HerStory’s storytelling initiatives.


Assets:

  • Experience working with Afghan or refugee communities, or knowledge of Afghan culture and history.

  • Background in nonprofit communications, editorial work, or creative writing.

  • Familiarity with tools like SharePoint, Outlook, Wix, Microsoft Teams, Canva, Riverside, Zoom, or social media platforms is an asset.
